On Friday 7 June, Christoph Sperfeldt, Regional Program Coordinator at the Asian International Justice Initiative, and Sarah Williams, Australian Human Rights Centre, Faculty of Law, UNSW presented a seminar entitled ‘Justice on the Margins: victim participation and reparations in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)’.
Beth Goldblatt recently attended a conference on 'Women's Social Security and Protection in India' and presented a paper on 'Women and the Right to Social Security - the International Human Rights Framework'.
Leading South African human rights activist, academic and Constitutional Court judge, Edwin Cameron, spent a day at UNSW Law presenting a lunchtime talk to students and on the rule of law and and met with judges and constitutional law academics over afternoon tea to discuss bills or rights, the value (and limitations) of law, and the vulnerability of rights when they impede power.
The AHRCentre co-hosted a seminar today, 29 April, on the international human right to social security and the impact of the recent cuts to income support for sole parents. Speakers included Beth Goldblatt, Cassandra Goldie, and Gerard Thomas. It also considered the application of human rights to recent changes to income entitlements for people with disability.
Earlier this week, UNSW Law Dean David Dixon and the AHRCentre welcomed Ambassador Lu Shumin, Madame Zhang Xiaoan and a delegation from the United Nations Association of China and representatives from the Australian Human Rights Commission to a reception to celebrate a unique partnership.
