One Billion Rising: Raising awareness of the world's most pervasive human rights violation - violence against women

It is estimated that over one billion women today have been or will be the victims of gender-based violence. The violence is indiscriminate and crosses borders, affecting women not only in developing countries, but also in the developed world, with 1 in 3 Australian women over the age of 15 experiencing some form of violence in their lifetimes. Eve Ensler, who delivered last year's annual lecture, is calling for a global strike on 14th February 2013 - an invitation to dance; a call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends; an act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers; a refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given; and a new time and a new way of being. Events are being held in over 170 countries, with the aim of getting one billion people to strike, dance, rise. See for an event near you.
