A workshop will be held from 16-17 October 2015 at the UNSW Law School. The workshop has two basic aims:
• First, it seeks to critically assess the extent of legal change in Australia by reference to recommendations in the Report of Professor Ronald Sackville entitled Law and Poverty in Australia, AGPS, Canberra, 1975, 40 years on. The proposed reforms covered legal aid, tenancy, consumer law, social security and criminal law, legal services and access to justice, and the position of disadvantaged people before the law (Aboriginal peoples, migrants, homeless, children).
• Second, it will examine the extent to which poverty, and the legal dimensions of it, present new challenges for lawyers, legal scholars and policy-makers; and it will explore the range of strategies best suited to address the new landscape.
We have gathered an array of experts presenters, local and international, from the fields of law and social policy. There is limited space for this event, so please RSVP early to avoid disappointment.
